Not to long ago I was giving a reference about Dr. Martello's book on The Old Religion to a friend and new member of the Craft. His writings affirmed my suspicions on many things concerning religion and changed my philosophy of life. I still have that copy and refer to it time and time again when I deal with students of the Craft. My thanks to him who now enjoys the Summerlands.

"Have fun with your hostilities" Leo said frequently. Whether it be putting a fish into a safe deposit box of a bank that disrespected him, letting nature takes its course, rotting during the passing weeks (later he scrubbed it out with cleanser) or inse ting a pepperoni stick into a cup during a quasi-initiation of one he had his doubts about, Leo was always smiling and laughing. I knew he was ill and would be gone soon, so I recorded him laughing once. I will look for that tape, play it and smile beca se he would want us to laugh and smile, even now.

Dr. Martello's book was the very first book I ever bought on The Craft almost 20 years ago, and I was so impressed with his knowledge and candor. My my Tradition is Sicilian; in fact, Leo's grandmother came from the same town as my grandmother. I always elt a kinship with him. Although I never met him, I have a wonderful friendship with Lori Bruno who knew him so well. He will be sorely missed.

I met Dr. Martello about ten years ago at a Witches Ball in NYC and subsequently at various events around town, but whenever I think of him I remember a photo I took at that ball; Leo, the oldest person in sight, was dressed in a purple fuzzy suit and a b g smile and was outdancing all us 20ish whippersnappers. He'll be missed by many.

I was about 8 years old and saw a picture of a dark and strange looking man in an astrology magazine. In big bold letters the text said BECOME A WITCH.I took my $5 and sent away for the first lesson.my mother intercepted it and freaked out.But my father r ad it with me and even though it said witch craft was not devil worship he kept calling it that anyway. Many years later I became a ceremonial magician,a tarot student, and a certified astrologer with aspirations to write.I have several things in the works. ny thing I publish will bear a notice:In Memeory of Leo Louis Martello where it all began for me.I learned of his passing while surfing the net looking for some of his books,What a loss for us but what a tremendous gain and prize for the other side.

I contacted Dr. Martello when I worked in Bethel, AK. It was a very lonely witchy time for me and I will never forget or lose the love I have for him. He took the time to write me and encourage me to continue my studies. He shared his studies with me and they helped me to grow into the individual that I am today, plus he gave me the courage to be the activist I am today. Dr. Martello will always be a cherished memory of love and happiness within my heart. Be well my friend and see you when you return! Leo Martello was there on the front lines for the Craft in the days when we could not be as open as we can today. Although we never had the honor to meet Dr. Martello in person, Lady Sintana made certain that all at Ravenwood knew the foundation laid for us by the true Elders of the Craft. Dr. Martello's work in gaining public recognition for Wicca as an authentic r ligious path is a gift that must never be taken for granted. As the young leaders of a group dedicated to public education and outreach, we pray that we never allow to be forgotten the works of Dr. Leo Martello, Lady Sybil Leek, Lord Govannon (Herman Slat r), Scott Cunningham, Stewart Farrar, Lady Alexandia and countless others who will no longer be with us to share their stories and hold our hands. Brightest Blessings to you Dr. Martello. May the kiss of the Lord and Lady always be upon your brow.

I remember Dr. Martello very well as one of the first Wiccan writers I read, along with Doreen Valiente, Janet and Stuart Farrar and Patricia Crowther. He had the vision to realize that one day, Wicca would grow into a viable religion and that we would e counter persecution from groups that wished we would not. He pioneered and led the foundations for Wiccan Religious Freedom in America. I shall indeed miss him, and hope that his courageous work is carried on.

The light of Aster is enhanced by the spirit of Dr. Leo Martello who now dwells with those great elders who have gone before him. As he blessed us all with his wisdom, knowledge, dedication, and perseverence, may he now be blessed in the presence of the ods. We who practice the Craft are able to do so because of his efforts and work. We who "stand on your shoulders" thank you, Dr. Martello, for your longsuffering amidst persecution and for your many accomplishments on our behalf. May the Old Gods, the Ancient Watchers, and the divine and reverend spirits of our fathers and mothers bless and keep you as you are guided by them through the Three Worlds. May the Goddess bless you with a new incarnation in keeping with the milestones you have earned for He children. We are all blessed in the wake of your Eldership and energies. Over the past several years we have had many of our World Elders of The Craft return to the Summerland. We lost Sybil Leek,Theodore Parker Mills, Scott Cummingham, Doreen Valiente,Stewart Farrar, Dr. Martello and many others. My first Craft book was Dr. M rtello's - "Witchcraft,The Old Religion". Although I was not of his Tradition, and never had the opportunity to personally meet him, I did received his Sage advice on several occassions over the past 27 years. I know that all, who have respected this Elde and his contributions to The Craft, will find comfort in the fact that we have been promised that we shall return "To a time and place to be with those we have known and Loved before"! Somewhere in the Cosmos there is a new "Star" that will guide those o the future to find their Path! May we all continue in that Great Work Yet Unfinished by him!

Some time ago a friend of mine, Mark, said there was a seminar he was going to that he felt I would enjoy. It was Dr. Martello. As he talked, I kept saying to myself, "I've done that...I've done that too....And that!!" And it all ended with me saying to m self, "It's called WHAT??" He opened my eyes and really got me started on a path I have embraced and enjoyed since then. I especially enjoyed hearing him tell the story of his grandmother going to the church. He was one of the gereat story tellers of all imes. Thank you Dr. Martello. May you find peace. And I also would like to thank Mark for thinking about me that day and giving me a chance to meet and know a great person.
