"Witchcraft: The Old Religion" was one of the very few books available when I began my studies of the Craft in the early 70's. Dr. Martello's caring and work for pagans of all types should always be remembered. He, Sybil Leek, the Farrars and even Lady heba, as well as Doreen Valiente in these later years (and the many others I have encountered during my journey) have done much to guide my footsteps along the path to the Gods. Mother, I pray you, guide his spirit safely through the Summerland. Blessed Be.

I came into the Craft in 1968 when there were few books to be found and no Internet. Leo's books, Witchcraft: The Old Religion and How To Prevent Psychic Blackmail, were among the first in my library. His leadership in founding WADL influenced my early ecision to be a public contact for the Wiccan community in Los Angeles. His was a voice of strength and dedication to our Lady and Lord and he will be deeply missed by those of us blessed to have known him in this life. Another star shines brightly in t e heavens to light our way. Rest and peace are now yours, Leo. My condolences and sympathies to his family. Blessed be, old friend.

I corresponded with Dr Martello in the early 902 for a brief time; I found him intelligent and opinionated, as well as knowledgable and dedicated to his craft. His loss is a great blow to the Craft; and is even more poignant following the deaths of Farrar and Valiente. Missed they will be, all of them. May your journey be swift and golden.

I have come to know of Leo Martello from a catalogue in which I had received from the Magickal Childe in New York City while I was still living in New Jersey. He had a booklet pertaining to ethics within a coven which had addressed many issues of what is nd isn't ethical within a coven, especially since I had an unpleasant experience with a training coven which was unethical. I had purchased the booklet by mail in which I had read. I have never met him in person, although I have seen a photo of him in one of the books that I had purchased pertaining to witchcraft. He was certainly a very good looking man.

Dr.Martello was responsible for introducing me to Witchcraft. His book,"Witchcraft The Old Religion" was my first stepping stone into my new faith and life. His words and dedication changed my life forever.I have been a Solitary Wiccan for 12 years, and have re-discovered life in a way that cannot be described.I still have that book, and have used it time nd time again for reference. I am very saddened at the passing of Leo Martello, a dear elder in La Vecchia Religione. Victor & Cora Anderson, long-time friends of Leo, said, "It is very sad" and also extend their loving regards to family, Lori, and other friends. I had the great hono and pleasure of being invited to Leo's home in NYC in December 1995. He was as rugged and good-looking then as he is in photos from the 60s. We spent the entire day talking and drinking coffee (Leo made it very black), and I enjoyed his warmth, good humo , and candid stories about the Craft and its celebs. He signed my books and gave me a few I didn't have. In 1998, I received a Yule card from Leo, informing me of his advancing illness, and news of his passing came as a shock to me. Yesterday, I spent som private time grieving for our loss. I admired him greatly, as he was the first male Witch I had ever heard of. I learned about him in _Witches USA_ by Florence Hershman in 1974 when I was only 10, and he (and the late Sybil Leek) inspired me to study the religion of the Goddess. Later, I sent away for Leo's Witchcraft course. IMO, his voice and contributions are often overlooked by the Wiccan and gay communities. Yet, if not for his daring activism, Pagans would not be enjoying many of the freedoms we hav today. He was a pioneer, whose views on the Craft were challenging and forced us to think. Thank you, Leo, for your work, for being outspoken, for sharing with me, and for encouraging me to continue writing. You will be greatly missed. We will meet, know and remember and love again I pray. May Diana e Lucifero bless and keep you always! Love & "Best Witches" (as Leo used to say), Kelesyn

I think that though he may not have been as well known as others "celebrity" pagan authors, his legacy is an important one, especially to us New York witches. His writings were in particular greatly enjoyed by our late Elder High Priestess Dalukah, who quoted him extensively in he writings and her teaching, which introduced hundreds to his work. It is because of Dr. Martello's work that the Craft has attained its level of Presence and Dignity as a valid religious path, and we are grateful for his contributions. Thank you for thi opportunity. May his Spirit enter into the Fullness of Joy that is the Presence of the Goddess and the God. and so it is....

I never knew Leo Martello, but over the years many tales have come my way. We saw things differently, but then diversity is the beauty of Nature itself. I offer a salute to one who was there on the front lines so many years ago. Nothing is forgotten, not ing is ever forgotten.

I was saddened to see the passing of Dr. Martello. I corresponded with him for a while back in the mid-seventies when I was first starting out in Paganism and found him to be a wise and kindly man who was patient in answering the simple questions of a ran beginner. His books were well-written and gave me needed direction in my studies. I consider him to be one of my mentors along the path and will never forget him or the help he gave me. May the Goddess and the God bless him in Summerland and with a happy future incarnation.

What an auspicious time as many of the elders of the "craft of the wise" are crossing over. We have all been touched by the sacrifices and love with which they have paved the way for the rest of us to continue to practice our glorious religion in peace. Dr. Martello, you will be missed. Blessed Be!

Thank you for opening the door so that others may follow and learn, Mr. Martello; and keeping the rights of those that *do* choose to learn the ways, protected. May you be granted a time of peace, and a place of honor and understanding, among those who ha e passed before us. Candles are lit here and my thoughts are with you.

May your journey to the Summerlands be a safe one. You will be sorely missed here but we will continue the fight to prevent the discrimination of those who walk the path of the Craft.

I am new to my path. I haven't had the pleasure of reading any of Dr. Martello's works, but in this path and world we live in; it is essential to pay homage to those who have helped pave the way for future generations. I hope the legacy and good deeds of r. Martello are and will stay well known throughout the pagan community because it sets a great example of how diversity can be overcome and how those things so good and natural in this world cannot be overlooked. May the Lord and Lady bless his soul, fam ly, and friends. Blessed Be!

Dr. Martello was kind enough to appear as a keynote speaker at Earthtides of Maine's first festival back in 1990. We remember him as a witty, charming, and colorful character who brightened the weekend immeasurably. I had a fun talk with him about the rel tive merits of dumpster-diving; he recycled before recycling was cool, and sold this country boy on its merits. I wish him peace! --C. Eric Robbins

Dear Leo, what a character he was. I had the opportunity some years back to meet him, at a local lecture. I was grateful for that time, for he helped keep my sanity growing up. His book, Witchcraft, the Old Religion, was one of the first I bought as a chi d. He and Sybil Leek helped keep me aware of my path as I endured parochial school. We will miss you, but know you've earned your spot in Summerland. All Witches, owe Leo a great deal, for helping make our way easier. Hail and farewell.

I did not know Dr. Martello. I know several people with the surname. I remember him and all our elders, including my great-grandmother, Angelina Dragotta, who removed warts with words and hand motions and spoke to those on the other side and those who had trouble going over. I remember all of the old ones of my mother's family named Alessi, who came from Palazzo D'Adriano, Sicily. And I remember Angelina Dragotta again for stoutly refusing to go to Mass saying,"That is not my Church!". Imagine, a tradition continuing all the way back to the Mystery cults of Greece and Rome. There are those who dare say our faith is new and manufactured. We know much better. Peace and Blessed be.

I was very saddened to learn of Dr. Martello's crossing over. I learned a great deal about the Old Ways of Italian Witchcraft from his literature. The Pagan community has lost one of their brightest stars with his passing. My blessings to him and his family. May he walk hand in hand with the Lord and Lady in the Summerland. Blessed be Dr. Martello and thank you for all that you gave us while you were here. Autumn

I am truely heartbroken and in awe...because i always admired Dr. Martello, and fostered a cute little crush on him. This was totally unexpected to me atleast, because I had heard nothing of him being dead. Although I have read only a handful of his writings, I loved what I read, and searched for information on him on and offline. This is really hard for me, because I haven't had to deal with the death of a favourite authour before, because Scott Cunningham died before I actually started to read about "what i was doing all along". This is a big shock, but I know that he is in the hand of the Grave Mother, who is holding him close to her heart while the Horned One stands by and smiles on him admiringly for all the good he did for the Pagan community. With tearful eyes i release this prayer into the sky... "Diana, Diana, The One who watches over me, I give my tears for you to return to the sea, Help me see the light of death, And all the blessings that the blessed witch left... With open eyes and an open heart Take his hand and lead him into the the dark To be reborn again someday, Again, born into the Old Way" Blessed be..I'm off to cry some more...:( Nick/Spaceboi/Xander Phoenix
